alfred hitchcock, filmmaker. born: london, england (1899 – 1980)

happy birthday hitch, it is your 111th! but, then you already know that. probably the best known and well liked director in cinema’s history.

his sardonic wit, his short, but memorable appearances in all his movies, and his penchant for blonde leading ladies (like tippi hendren, eva marie saint,  grace kelly, and the mysterious kim novak in his masterpiece “vertigo”) along with using bernard hermann, probably hollywood’s finest film scorer innumerable times (especially bernard violin only score for “psycho”) make him one of hollywood’s truly great directors.

his dry sense of humor, like calling all actors “cattle” was not always appreciated by some of those actors. however, carol lombard found it amusing to bring a cow along with her for the first day of shooting of “mr. and mrs. smith”. he also  worked frequently with one of america’s best graphic artist, saul bass, to create the title sequences, posters and story boards (bass drew the story board to the shower sequence in “the birds”).

it is hard to believe he was making popular silent films in his native england like “the lodger” in 1926. happy birthday, hitch!
